Aleem Khan orders barrier-free motorways with AI-based monitoring

Federal Minister stresses E-Tag strengthening, traffic safety, digitized toll revenue, and private-sector backed plantation drives

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed that all Motorways be made barrier-free in accordance with international standards, with a stronger emphasis on expanding the E-Tag system.

Chairing a high-level meeting at the National Highway Authority (NHA) Headquarters, the minister announced that in the first phase, an Artificial Intelligence system based on computerized monitoring will be rolled out on the M-1 and M-2 Motorways. He further instructed that a fully computerized monitoring mechanism should eventually cover all Highways across the country.

Aleem Khan stressed that violations such as over-speeding must immediately trigger a text message notification to the vehicle owner. He directed Motorway Police personnel to avoid stepping in front of fast-moving vehicles to stop them, underscoring that human life is more valuable and that such actions create serious risks of accidents.

The minister also called for reforms in revenue and contracting. He said the open auction policy for toll plazas should be replicated in other contracts and highlighted the need for a uniform commercial policy on both sides of Highways with complete revenue digitization. Public feedback, he added, must be encouraged to further improve the system.

On commercial land use, Aleem Khan instructed the NHA to fix reasonable NOC fees, with rates categorized according to city and business type. He also emphasized tree plantation along Motorways using non-traditional methods, involving the private sector in planting, growth, and preservation to ensure environmental sustainability.

During the session, the NHA Chairman and senior officials briefed the minister on operational matters. Aleem Khan also visited various departments at NHA Headquarters to review ongoing improvements.
