DISCOs seek Rs 0.19/unit hike for August fuel charges adjustment

NEPRA to hold public hearing on September 29 to discuss the proposed increase in power tariff for DISCO consumers

ISLAMABAD: Power tariffs are likely to increase as power distribution companies (DISCOs) have requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to approve a 19 paisa per unit hike in the electricity price under the fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for August 2025.

According to details, NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on September 29, 2025, to discuss the request filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency Guarantee Limited (CPPA-G) for the fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for the month of August 2025 for Ex-WAPDA distribution companies (DISCOs).

As per the data provided by CPPA-G, a total of 14,218 GWh of electricity was generated in August 2025. Hydel power contributed the largest share of generation, with 5,517 GWh (38.80%), followed by RLNG with 2,180 GWh (15.33%), nuclear power with 2,145 GWh (15.09%), and local coal with 1,442 GWh (10.14%). Imported coal accounted for 1,138 GWh (8.01%), while gas-based generation stood at 1,035 GWh (7.28%). Other sources included wind with 512 GWh (3.60%), bagasse with 36 GWh (0.25%), and solar with 104 GWh (0.73%).

The data submitted by CPPA-G showed that the total fuel cost for the month amounted to Rs103,421 million, resulting in an average fuel cost of Rs7.2738 per unit. After adjusting for previous adjustments, sales to independent power producers (IPPs), and transmission losses of 3.31%, the net electricity delivered to DISCOs was recorded at 13,715 GWh.

Based on these figures, CPPA-G has requested an increase of Rs0.1911 per unit over the reference fuel cost of Rs7.3149 per unit, which will be passed on to DISCO consumers under the monthly FCA mechanism.

The hearing will also address adjustments for K-Electric consumers, in line with the Federal Government’s policy guidelines for uniform fuel charges adjustments across the country.

NEPRA has invited all interested and affected parties to participate in the hearing and submit their written or oral objections as permitted by law. Relevant documents, including copies of the NEPRA Act, rules, regulations, and the detailed request filed by CPPA-G, are available on the NEPRA website.

Consumers and stakeholders can attend the hearing in person or join online through the provided Zoom link. NEPRA emphasized that public participation is crucial for ensuring transparency in the decision-making process.
