Gilani urges sustainable tourism to boost Pakistan’s global image and economic growth

Senate Chairman praises Malam Jabba as a model destination; invites UK investors under SIFC framework while reaffirming parliamentary support for the tourism sector

Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has underscored the critical role of tourism in Pakistan’s economic diversification, job creation, and international engagement, describing it as “more than a commercial activity — a bridge fostering cultural understanding and people-to-people ties.”

Speaking at a meeting with the Malam Jabba International Advisory Board, Gilani said the tourism sector carries immense potential to project a positive image of Pakistan while empowering local communities and promoting inclusive growth.

The meeting gathered leading national and international figures to explore Pakistan’s tourism prospects and outline strategies for sustainable development through the Malam Jabba project.

Senator Sherry Rehman, Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change, was also in attendance. She highlighted that tourism serves as a unifying force that brings people closer and fosters understanding among nations.

Gilani extended a warm welcome to Lord Amir Sarfaraz of Kensington, a member of the UK House of Lords, acknowledging his steadfast advocacy for strengthening Pakistan–United Kingdom ties. “Lord Amir Sarfaraz is a true friend of Pakistan whose efforts have significantly enhanced bilateral understanding, cooperation, and goodwill,” he remarked.

The Chairman Senate also expressed appreciation for General Patrick Sander, commending his leadership and strategic insight, and noted that his participation would bring valuable perspectives to the Advisory Board’s deliberations.

Gilani paid tribute to the Malam Jabba International Advisory Board for its continued commitment to promoting sustainable tourism and investment opportunities in Pakistan. Citing recent figures, he observed that international tourist arrivals in Pakistan have risen sharply, signaling renewed confidence in the country’s tourism landscape.

He added that domestic tourism has witnessed impressive expansion, reflecting the growing public interest in exploring Pakistan’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. The Chairman called for concerted efforts to improve infrastructure, accessibility, and service quality to attract more international travellers and strengthen Pakistan’s position on the global tourism map.

Recognising Malam Jabba as a model destination, Gilani said the resort represents a successful blend of natural beauty, adventure sports, and cultural experiences within a sustainable framework. “Malam Jabba exemplifies how public facilitation, private innovation, and community participation can work together to generate employment and stimulate local economies,” he said.

Reaffirming the Senate’s commitment, Gilani noted that the Upper House views tourism as a strategic enabler of national progress and remains dedicated to supporting it through legislative, oversight, and diplomatic means.

He expressed confidence that the meeting would pave the way for stronger institutional linkages and practical cooperation, turning tourism into a key driver of economic development. The Chairman reaffirmed his full support for initiatives that enhance Pakistan’s tourism visibility, improve the investment climate, and ensure policy coherence.

Calling the Malam Jabba project “a model of excellence,” Gilani said it embodies innovation, sustainability, and national pride through vision, partnership, and commitment.

Inviting UK investors and businesspersons to explore Pakistan’s tourism potential, the Chairman said the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) provides a unified platform for facilitating foreign investment in the sector.

During the meeting, Ambassador to the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference, Misbah Khar, informed participants that Gilani has been elected as the founding Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC), which will convene in November 2025 with speakers from 45 countries.

She said the conference, themed “Peace, Security and Development,” would serve as a vital platform to deliberate on shared global challenges and opportunities.
