PM Sharif sets 2027 SCO summit as target for Islamabad’s transformation

Premier launches Rs1.495bn T-Chowk flyover project, pledges transport expansion and urban beautification

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced that Pakistan will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in 2027 and directed authorities to begin preparations by upgrading Islamabad’s infrastructure and outlook.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the T-Chowk flyover in Rawat, the prime minister said the capital’s beautification drive was already underway through landscaping and horticulture projects, with tree and plant donations from Tajikistan and ongoing improvement works along Constitution Avenue.

Sharif stressed that quality would not be compromised in development projects, including the one-kilometer flyover designed to ease traffic congestion for residents of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and adjoining areas.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the project, designed by NESPAK at a cost of Rs1.495 billion, would be completed in 150 days and serve more than 41,500 vehicles daily out of the nearly 100,000 that cross the junction.

The prime minister also highlighted broader plans for expanding public transport in the twin cities, including a proposed railcar project, new metro bus routes, and electric vehicle-based transport.

Meanwhile, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has completed the bidding process for the Shaheen Chowk underpass, part of a series of infrastructure projects aimed at modernizing Islamabad ahead of the 2027 summit.
