The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has intensified its campaign against electricity theft, apprehending 5,929 individuals and imposing fines worth Rs503.4 million. In coordination with police, 2,950 people have also been arrested, according to a press release issued on Monday.
The crackdown, launched in 2023 under directives from the Federal Government and Ministry of Energy (Power Division), has so far covered more than 2.8 million electricity meters across all consumer categories.
IESCO Chief Executive Engineer Chaudhry Khalid Mahmood said the company was pursuing “extreme measures” to root out power theft, with all formations actively engaged in the campaign. He stressed there was “no space for power thieves” in the IESCO region, describing electricity theft as both a sin and a national crime that undermines Pakistan’s economy and prosperity.
He praised the efforts of IESCO’s operations, metering and testing, and surveillance teams, urging them to press ahead with greater dedication and without bowing to any pressure.
The IESCO chief also appealed to the public to support the initiative by reporting electricity theft to their respective Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), the helpline at 118, or the Central Complaint and Monitoring Cell at 051-9252933.
