NEPRA likely to increase power tariff by Rs1.93 per unit

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is likely to approve Rs1.9 per unit increase in power tariff under the head monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism, Pakistan Today has learnt on Monday.

According to details, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted an application with NEPRA, seeking Rs1.9382/kWh power tariff hike over the reference fuel charges, i-e. Rs5.7576/kWh, under the head monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism for power distributing companies (DISCOs).

In this regard, the NEPRA’s hearing to consider the proposed adjustment is scheduled on Wednesday (February 20) at the NEPRA headquarter, Islamabad.

Based on the information provided by the CPPA, the total energy generated with various sources was 7,763.57 gigawatts per hour (GWh), while net delivered to DISCOs was 7,423.11GWh.

As per CCPA’s details with regard to total generation of electricity in the month of January 2019, power generated with hydel sources was 477.62GWh, which is 6.15 per cent of the total power generated in the said month. Similarly, power produced with coal was registered at 1,451.80GWh, which is 18.7pc of the total generation.

Electricity generated through high-speed diesel (HSD) was 12.26GWh (0.16pc), residual fuel oil 1,722.06GWh (22.18pc), gas 1,709.42GWh (22.02pc), re-gasified liquefied natural gas 1,138.25GWh (14.66pc), nuclear 905.62GWh (11.66pc), Iranian import 35.04GwH (0.45pc), mixed sources 25.62GWh (0.33pc), wind 156.27GWh (2.01pc), bagasse 86.42pc (1.11pc), and solar 43.20GWh (0.56pc).

In a public notice, NEPRA has requested all the interested /affected parties have invited to raise written/oral objections as permissible under the law at the public hearing.

It is pertinent to mention that the NEPRA had already notified an increase in the power tariff by Re0.5685 KWh on account of fuel price adjustment for the month of December 2018. This increase in tariff of electricity was expected to put a burden of around Rs4.20 billion on the electricity consumers.

Pursuant to Section 31 (7) of the NEPRA Act (XL of 1997) and the mechanism for monthly fuel price adjustment prescribed by the authority in the tariff determinations of ex-WAPDA DISCOs, the authority has to review and revise the approved tariff on account of any variations in the fuel charges on a monthly basis.
