- Minister says implementation of new renewable energy policy will drastically reduce carbon footprints
ISLAMABAD: The government has planned to increase the share of renewable energy to 30pc by 2030, said Energy (Power Division) Minister Omar Ayub Khan, adding that together with hydel resources, the share of clean and green resources for electricity generation will cross 60pc.
In a meeting with European Union Ambassador Jean-Francois Cautain on Wednesday, the minister said Pakistan’s new renewable energy policy would help reduce carbon footprints drastically. Prime Minister’s Task Force on Energy Chairman Nadeem Babar was also present on the occasion.
“The share of hydel component in the energy mix of Pakistan is around 30pc. It means that by 2030, more than 60pc of the country’s electricity would be produced from clean and green resources,” he added.
He said that a seminar on energy conservation is being planned for the next month in order to promote the importance of clean and green energy.
He added that Pakistan’s per capita energy consumption pattern is indicating high demand in the near future, offering huge investment opportunities in power generation, transmission and distribution with a competitive return on investment.
The minister noted Pakistan’s per capita energy consumption is around 500KW, almost 700KW less than the region, 2,400KW less than China and 7,000KW less than the developed countries.
Nadeem Babar on the occasion informed the ambassador regarding the four pillars of energy policy including availability, affordability, sustainability and responsibility.
The EU envoy appreciated the steps taken by the present government with regard to the utilization of clean and green sources of energy, saying that the investors in EU are closely following Pakistan energy markets.
