FIA calls for revamping ATM security

After arresting Chinese nationals for the second time in less than a year for allegedly stealing data through ATMs using skimming devices, the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) preliminary probe reveals that the use of ‘obsolete technology’ is to be blamed for the theft.

FIA has asked the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to direct all the banks to use biometric features for the use of ATM service and enhance its security.

According to media reports, FIA’s cyber crime cell has made three arrests of Chinese citizens in two operations within a year. Two Chinese nationals were taken into custody last week after a bank’s management informed the agency about suspicious activity of two foreigners at one of its ATM booths.

FIA arrested Zhong Xianming and Zhong Xianquan. It also seized the skimming devices, which are ineffective in most countries due to advanced technology and additional security features.
