Rs88bn income tax stuck as taxpayers move courts against FBR

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) could not collect Rs87.42 billion income tax from taxpayers about as they moved various forums and courts to challenge the claims, said an audit report presented before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) at its meeting the other day.

According to a local newspaper report, FBR Acting Chairperson Nosheen Javed Amjad informed the PAC that the taxpayers moved the customs, excise and sales tax tribunals, the high courts, the Supreme Court etc in 96 cases that are still pending and some cases have been pending since 2011 and 2012.

Nosheen told  PAC that the bureau has requested the chief justices of the high courts to constitute special benches on tax-related matters for speedy disposal of these cases.
