KP craftswomen find empowerment through online businesses

Peshawar: Traditional craftswomen from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are being trained by the National Incubation Center (NIC), to market their products online, and set up e-commerce businesses that will earn them handsome amounts on a regular basis for their handicrafts.
According to Sana Tahseen Durrani, a part of the NIC and a digital entrepreneur in her own right, women in KP that possess different crafts such as embroidery and sewing, have great potential if they market and sell their products online. The NIC hopes to give them better opportunities and training to run these online businesses.
“Since 2014, we have been providing services to government and non-government organizations in the province in various fields, including mobile app designing, web designing, social media content writing, software, photo and video editing etc,” said Durrani. “Our organization has also started work on a training course to involve more women of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and enable to them to learn online business training along with graphic design to further empower them.”
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information and Technology board has also started different courses for women across the province, which is a welcome step toward empowering women of the province. Durrani hoped that with digital training, thousands of women in the province would be able to earn online, creating thousands of jobs in the process.
To start off, the NIC has selected more than 30 women, most of whom are homeless and financially weak. Out of these 30 women, 7 are over 40 years old and widows, while the remaining of the women are also financially extremely weak.
Durrani said that after getting help setting up their online business, the women associated with embroidery will take orders themselves and would earn their living online. At the same time, Durrani said women from Shabqadar were introduced to a leading designer for free training so that they could learn the latest techniques of sewing and embroidery, after which online orders of their products will be placed for them.
The garments will be marketed online, which will enable the women to earn their living and move in their business in right direction financially.
