Canadian PM says Canada decides its own auto industry future

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday pushed back against comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he did not want Canadian cars and suggested raising tariffs on automotive imports from Canada.

Speaking in British Columbia ahead of Monday’s general election, Carney accused Trump of trying to break Canada’s position in the North American auto industry.

“He said he doesn’t want Canada to play any part in the North American auto industry. So, I will be equally clear: this is Canada – we decide what happens here,” Carney said during a campaign event.

Trump, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, warned that the current 25% tariff on Canadian cars entering the U.S. could be increased, raising fresh concerns over trade tensions and the impact on Canada’s auto sector.
