Microsoft adds AI-powered Copilot Mode to Edge browser

The new feature allows users to compare information across open tabs, group browsing by topic, and carry out tasks without switching windows

Microsoft on Monday launched a new “Copilot Mode” in its Edge browser, adding artificial intelligence features that help users organize, search, and navigate the web more efficiently.

The move comes as technology firms increase their focus on AI-powered tools for browsing and online search.

The new feature allows users to compare information across open tabs, group browsing by topic, and carry out tasks without switching windows. Microsoft said the tool combines chat, search, and navigation into a single input box and includes voice control support.

Users will be able to allow Copilot to access more browser context, such as history and credentials, to complete actions like booking services or managing tasks. Copilot will only access this information when permission is given, and will show visual indicators when it is running in the background.

The feature is being offered for free in Copilot-supported markets on Windows and Mac devices for a limited time. Users can turn it off in the Edge settings.

The update follows recent launches by other tech firms. Nvidia-backed Perplexity AI released its Comet browser earlier this month. Alphabet earlier this year rolled out “AI Mode,” a search feature for Google, and said last week that user engagement with AI tools has increased.
