Xiaomi’s electric car launch in Pakistan delayed amid strong domestic demand

Air Link Communication cites high domestic demand in China as a factor for postponing the anticipated launch of Xiaomi's electric vehicles in Pakistan

Air Link Communication announced on Thursday that the much-anticipated launch of Xiaomi electric cars in Pakistan will face delays. The company indicated that Xiaomi is focusing on meeting the surging domestic demand for electric vehicles in China, leading to the postponement of the launch in Pakistan.

During a corporate briefing attended by Topline Securities, the company revealed that the initial expectation for the launch in Pakistan this year is no longer feasible due to the prioritization of production for left-hand drive vehicles for the Chinese market.

Air Link remains in talks with the government regarding export approvals. Once approvals are granted, the company anticipates significant revenue growth of over 200%.

Xiaomi electric vehicles, particularly the SU7 Max, were seen at Karachi port in September 2024. Air Link, which manufactures Xiaomi mobile phones in Pakistan, had earlier expressed intentions to launch EVs in the country. Air Link’s CEO, Muzzaffar Hayat Piracha, confirmed that two Xiaomi SU7 units were imported to Pakistan, but the establishment of an assembly plant will depend on market dynamics and strategic considerations.

Additionally, Air Link expects improved earnings this year due to tax exemptions after relocating to the Sundar Green SEZ facility, with plans to shift by December 2025 or in the first half of FY26. The company is also exploring expanding its product portfolio into air conditioners, washing machines, and microwaves, but no formal agreements have been finalized as of yet.
