Customs seize smuggled goods worth over Rs170 million in major crackdown in Peshawar, Karachi

Operations intercept high-end mobile phones, tampered luxury vehicles, betel nuts, tyres and foreign cigarettes across KP and Sindh

Pakistan Customs carried out major enforcement actions across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh this week, seizing smuggled goods worth more than Rs170 million in a series of coordinated operations targeting illicit trade routes.

In KP, the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement Peshawar reported multiple successful interceptions. The Enforcement Division D.I. Khan seized three trucks transporting 12,200 kilograms of smuggled betel nuts, 4,021 sleeves of foreign cigarettes and 170 tyres. The goods, along with the vehicles, carried an estimated value of Rs54.5 million.

In a separate action, D.I. Khan officials confiscated non-duty-paid cosmetics, including hand and face creams, lotions, shampoos and petroleum jellies, worth Rs2.4 million, recovered from various passenger conveyances. The Peshawar Division also impounded two non-duty-paid vehicles, a Toyota Vitz and a Toyota Aqua, valued at around Rs8 million.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Smuggling Directorate in Nowshera intercepted a JAC pickup loaded with 2,000 sleeves of foreign cigarettes. The vehicle and cargo were seized, with the case assessed at Rs9.5 million. Customs officials said these actions reflect an intensified effort to curb smuggling across KP.

In Sindh, the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement Karachi seized 564 high-end smuggled mobile phones hidden inside a tampered Toyota Land Cruiser Prado during an intelligence-led operation near the Karachi–Hyderabad Toll Plaza. The seized items are collectively valued at Rs96 million.

The vehicle, carrying registration number BF-7199, was stopped after intelligence suggested it was smuggled. The occupants could not provide lawful import documents. Initial inspection revealed suspicious welding marks on the front of the car, prompting detailed checks that uncovered five concealed cavities inside the Prado.

Customs officers recovered assorted premium mobile phones, including Google Pixel and Motorola models, worth Rs64 million. A forensic report later confirmed that the SUV itself was tampered and non-duty-paid, valued at approximately Rs32 million.

Both the vehicle and the phones were seized under the Customs Act, 1969. An FIR has been registered, and investigators are working to identify the smuggling network involved.
