OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have announced the addition of five new AI data center sites under their Stargate infrastructure platform, bringing the combined capacity of Stargate to nearly 7 gigawatts. This marks a major step toward the companies’ goal of securing a $500 billion, 10-gigawatt commitment by the end of 2025, ahead of schedule.
The new sites, located in Texas, New Mexico, and the Midwest, will significantly boost the platform’s AI capabilities. The expansion follows a partnership between OpenAI and Oracle to develop up to 4.5 gigawatts of Stargate capacity, with a combined investment exceeding $300 billion over the next five years.Â
The new projects are expected to create over 25,000 onsite jobs and tens of thousands of additional jobs across the U.S.
Two additional sites, developed through a collaboration between SoftBank and OpenAI, will further enhance the scalability and cost-efficiency of AI infrastructure. These sites, located in Ohio and Texas, will be operational within 18 months, enabling faster deployment of AI compute resources.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the critical need for robust AI infrastructure, stating, “AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it. We’re already making historic progress through Stargate.”
The five new sites were selected from over 300 proposals across more than 30 U.S. states, marking the first set of choices made by the Stargate partnership. With more sites planned, the project is set to further drive advancements in AI technology, benefiting both the industry and broader society.
Oracle’s CEO, Clay Magouyrk, highlighted the importance of Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in scaling AI, while SoftBank’s Chairman Masayoshi Son emphasized the role of their innovative data center design in powering AI’s future.
The $500 billion Stargate commitment was first announced in January as part of a broader initiative to invest in U.S. AI infrastructure. With the support of President Trump’s policies, the project has advanced faster than expected, drawing additional partners and momentum.
