Pakistan launches first Google Chromebook assembly line

FM Dar highlights the significance of local production for affordability and economic growth

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday inaugurated Pakistan’s first Google Chromebook assembly line, marking a significant step in the country’s digital journey.

Speaking at the launch ceremony in Islamabad, FM Dar emphasized that localizing the assembly of Chromebooks would make digital tools more affordable and accessible, particularly in the education sector. He highlighted the economic benefits of the initiative, noting its potential to create jobs, develop supply chains, and position Pakistan for future technology exports.

FM Dar further stated that Google’s decision to open a local office in Pakistan was a moment of national pride, underscoring the country’s digital potential and its growing importance in the global digital economy. The initiative will bring Google closer to Pakistani startups and entrepreneurs, enabling direct collaboration and providing greater access to global platforms.

He also mentioned a strategic memorandum of understanding between Pakistan and Google, which includes a plan to train 100,000 developers nationwide and advance localized AI-powered solutions such as Android services for public safety.

FM Dar reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a favorable environment for global technology companies to invest, collaborate, and establish a sustainable presence in Pakistan. He added that efforts were underway to rationalize the tax structure to make it more competitive.

Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima also addressed the event, calling the launch of the Chromebook assembly line a transformative step that integrates technology, manufacturing, and education. She expressed her commitment to continuing Pakistan’s digital development at a fast pace.
