Sales of two-wheeler, three-wheeler vehicles shoot up after ease in lockdown

KARACHI: As Covid-19 lockdown began to ease, the sales of motorcycles gained momentum in the past month, a national daily reported.

Association of Pakistan Motorcycle Assemblers (APMA) Chairman Muhammad Sabir Shaikh spoke to the media and said that the country produced and sold 300,000 units of motorcycles in July 2020. Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) recorded sales also showed a 31.3 percent increase in sales of two-and three-wheeler vehicles in July, which is less than half of the figure quoted by APMA. The newspaper pointed out that the difference is due to limited bike companies (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, United and Road Prince) being members of PAMA.

Unique, Super Power, Hi- Speed, Union Star, Super Star, Express, DYL, Dhoom, Zxmco, Super Asia, New Asia and other assemblers are not members of PAMA and their data is available with the Engineering Development Board (EDB), APMA chairman said.

Atlas Honda produced and sold over 90,000 motorcycles each in June and July 2020, according to the chairman, thus showing recovery from the sales dip due to coronavirus pandemic. The rise in sales can also be partially attributed to the crop harvesting season since the sales of two-wheelers are known to show an upward trend because of that.
