KARACHI: Pakistan’s first lignite-fueled-ultra-supercritical of Lucky Electric will be setup by General Electric in Bin Qasim, Karachi having a production capacity of 660 megawatts, the company said on Thursday.
According to General Electric, this will become the first such power plant across Turkey, North Africa and the Middle East to be using this technology which provides generation of efficient and reliable power at a competitive cost for 1.3 million households and industries in Pakistan.
The plant is set to begin operations in 2021 and a Chinese construction and engineering company SEPCOIII will build it.
Project Director SEPCOIII Qin Xubao said “SEPCOIII has worked with GE for many years now on power projects around the world. “We are confident that our collaboration, which brings together GE’s industry-leading technologies with SEPCOIII’s outstanding management skills and execution resources, will lead to the successful completion of this important project.”
This power project of Lucky Electric will be the first outside Thar district to be utilizing lignite mined by the Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company from Thar Block II besides having a backup of imported lignite coal.
President/CEO GE Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan Sarim Sheikh said coal would remain a critical part of Pakistan’s energy mix.
Sheikh said “The ultra-supercritical technology by GE is not only reliable, affordable, and an efficient solution, but also helps to lower emissions. “The turbines will generate up to 660MW to help the country bridge the gap between electricity demand and available supply.”
