ISLAMABAD: Despite claims by the government that it is working to curb the mafia in the sugar and wheat industries, the government has been unable to ensure sufficient supply of sugar and flour at reasonable prices.
In Karachi one kilogramme (kg) of sugar is being sold for Rs95 while the price of flour stands at Rs70 per kg.Â
In other parts of the country, food inflation is on the rise as well. The price of sugar in Punjab’s capital, Lahore, currently stands at Rs95 to Rs100 per kg.Â
Similarly, the price of a 20kg bag of flour is also on the rise in the country. Even at utility stores 20kg bags of flour are being sold at a higher price than that fixed by the government.
In Multan, a 20kg flour bag is being sold for Rs1,020 compared to the approved price of Rs860. Meanwhile, the price of sugar in the city ranges between Rs90 to Rs92 per kg, despite the fact that the government had earlier set the price of sugar at Rs70 per kg.Â
